The newly-established Fraunhofer ESK Industrial Lab offers a wide range of opportunities for measuring, testing and developing wireless systems. Researchers use the lab to work on new technologies for wireless-based communication as well as software architectures and methods for industrial applications.
The measurement activities examine the benefits of frequency management, which can ensure the efficient and robust operation of a wireless system. Measurement data provides further information regarding what types of interference can be expected and how high the risk of interference is. It also helps in selecting the optimal wireless solution.
Researchers have an extensive collection of development platforms for sensor networks and self-developed, energy-saving software modules at their disposal, enabling them to quickly develop and implement application-specific sensor network solutions for security, energy and manufacturing technologies. Software defined radios make it easy to demonstrate the feasibility and ease-of-implementation of innovative transmission methods.
In the area of software architectures and methods, the lab is equipped with multicore-processor evaluation systems that are used for researching and testing new architecture approaches and design methods for parallel multicore applications. The lab also has a mechatronic simulation environment and programmable logic controllers (PLC) for the commissioning and testing of automation systems.
